Bahamas' pink-sand beach considered among world’s best

Stay at Coral Sands or Pink Sands on Harbour Island and enjoy the island’s famous three-mile-long Pink Sands Beach

Bahamas (March 28, 2007) – With rosy, powder-soft sand as far as the eye can see, come and experience the pink-hued beach at Harbour Island in The Bahamas, truly one of the world’s must-see beaches. And thanks to nearby hotels Coral Sands and Pink Sands, visitors enjoy utmost privacy and trademark Bahamian service during their pink beach sabbatical.

Three miles long and declared “quite possibly the finest beach in the world” by Condé Nast Traveler and “Best Sand Beach” by the Travel Channel, the Pink Sands Beach of Harbour Island is as much a mystery as it is a haven for seclusion and serenity. The beach’s pink colour comes from microscopic coral insects called foraminifera. With bright pink or red shells, they thrive underneath reefs, on sea floors, beneath rocks and in caves, and wash up on shore when waves or fish knock them loose. Unlike typical beaches, the sand here is always cool, so feel free to walk about with bare feet. A barrier reef creates a natural aquarium with sparkling waters, perfect for snorkelling and some of the safest swimming in The Bahamas.

Coral Sands Hotel on Harbour Island is a relaxed sanctuary embracing the laid-back cool of The Bahamas. Nestled on the northeast coast of Eleuthera Island, its 36 rooms are a home-away-from-home, boasting a British colonial style that is modern, yet comfortable, thanks to a multi-million-dollar upgrade. Relax, rejuvenate, and re-energize among the natural beauty of eight tropical acres of lush swaying palms, hibiscus, bougainvillea and jasmine. Mouths water at the renowned Coral Sands restaurant, featuring The Bahamas’ freshest seafood. Adventurous activities and day trips are easily arranged. A freshwater lagoon pool offers refreshment.

Rates begin at $305 per night based on double occupancy, with an additional 20 per cent tax and service fee.

Pink Sands Hotel offers the perfect mix of sophisticated hideaway, colonial charm, flawless service and seaside luxury in Harbour Island. Lush vegetation twines across this 20-acre haven, which is also an official bird sanctuary. A resort designed around an eclectic mixture of Moroccan, Indian and Balinese inspiration, Pink Sands provides delicious cuisine, massage services and sea excursions to further harmonize the tranquil setting. The 25 pastel cottages may have a hot designer and an even hotter celebrity guest list, but management remains mum to maintain privacy.

Summer rates start at $600 per night for two people. Rates include full breakfast and dinner daily. An 18 per cent service charge is additional.
