Bonaire foundation honours DEMA

Award recognizes DEMA’s contribution to marine protection

Kralendijk, Bonaire (December 6, 2006) – On November 11, 2006 the International Accolade Foundation of Bonaire presented an award of recognition to Tom Ingram of the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association (DEMA). The award was presented to honour the DEMA Show’s 30th anniversary, as well as the important role the association has played in promoting marine protection. The presentation of the award certificate and beautiful pewter medal was made by Jack Chalk during DEMA Show 2006 in Orlando, Florida.

“The Accolade Foundation of Bonaire applauds DEMA’s 30th anniversary, and our board has unanimously agreed that because of DEMA there have been untold organizations, dive shops, individuals and groups that have found the truth in environmentalism,” read Jack Chalk from a statement prepared by Captain Don Stewart, Founder of the International Accolade Foundation of Bonaire.

In presenting the award to Ingram, Chalk also read a speech about the important role divers play in protecting natural resources, which was previously delivered by Captain Don at the DEMA show in Anaheim, California in 1998 on the occasion of his receipt of the DEMA Reaching Out Award.

The International Accolade Foundation was founded in 2005 by Captain Don to work with educational and public service NGOs to promote worldwide ocean conservation. The foundation also provides awards and scholarships for outstanding worldwide marine environmental achievements. A leader in marine conservation, Captain Don who has also been called the “founder” of the dive industry in Bonaire and is the founder of the Council of Underwater Resort Operators of Bonaire (CURO), was inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame in 2005.

Located eighty-six miles east of Aruba, the Dutch-Caribbean island of Bonaire offers year-round sunshine, low annual rainfall, pristine coral formations and the most thriving fish population in the Caribbean. Ideal for adventurers, explorers and sun worshippers alike, Bonaire offers myriad eco-adventure activities, including world-renowned scuba diving and snorkelling, windsurfing, kiteboarding, landsailing, mountain biking, sea and mangrove kayaking, horseback riding, nature tours, hiking, birdwatching, sailing and deep-sea and bone fishing. And with a selection of accommodations ranging from full-service oceanfront resorts and condominiums to guest houses and small inns, Bonaire has something for every lifestyle and budget.
