Cayman Islands’ International Storytelling Festival, Gimistory
Storytellers from around the world converge in the Cayman Islands November 25th to December 3rd, 2005, for this free festival
Visitors of all ages will enjoy Gimistory, the Cayman Islands’ International Storytelling Festival, which runs from November 25th to December 3rd, 2005. Listen to traditional stories, funny stories, duppy (ghost) stories, and stories told through calypso, mime, and dance by animated and colorful tellers who come from all over the world.
Outdoor venues for this free festival are as varied as they are beautiful and include historic and picturesque locations that span the length of the island, such as the sandy shores of Smith Cove and the dramatic perch of Pedro St. James.
Started in 1999 by the Cayman National Cultural Foundation, the idea for the festival was to revive a dwindling art form integral to the cultural heritage of Caymanians, and ensure this pastime will never be lost. This year’s festival features 15 storytellers from such places as Trinidad, India, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Guyana, and the US, as well as local tellers. In addition to the scheduled shows, the tellers will also demonstrate the art of storytelling in schools.
