Antigua (November 13, 2006) – The Antigua & Barbuda Marine Association announce that plans are well underway for the first Superyacht Cup Antigua set for December 13-16, 2006 at the historic Nelson’s Dockyard on the Caribbean island of Antigua. Organized by The Superyacht Cup team from Palma, Mallorca who is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, the Antigua event will follow the same three-day format as the Mallorca event, including a program of dockside and other social functions.
The Superyacht Cup Antigua will take place directly following the 45th Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting December 6-11, also at Nelson’s Dockyard. Although the Charter Meeting is an industry show, the Superyacht Cup offers owners the chance to sail or charter their yachts before the winter charter season gets underway.
“I am delighted that we will have a Superyacht Cup event in Antigua, particularly following the Charter Meeting when so many of the yachts will already be in Antigua,” said Paul Deeth, chairman of ACYM (Antigua Charter Meeting). “The Superyacht Cup in Palma is always a fantastic way to end the Mediterranean season and now we have the same event in Antigua to start the Caribbean season. We look forward to a great event.”
Up to 15 yachts are expected to enter the inaugural event, including the 35m Farr-designed Sojana and 42m Frers-design Rebecca, both of which participated at The Superyacht Cup in Palma last year.
“We have had a great deal of interest in the event so far,” commented Patrick Whetter of The Superyacht Cup organization. “Nelson’s Dockyard is the perfect venue, and we look forward to seeing many of our regular supporters, as well as welcoming new yachts from the US and Caribbean.”
The Superyacht Cup Antigua will adopt the same pursuit race format as The Superyacht Cup in Palma. Yachts are allocated start times on the first day of the event, which are then adjusted on the second and third day based on the finishing times of each yacht the previous day. Points are accumulated per day with a point’s multiplier on the last day to keep the final positions as open as possible.
