Cayman Islands’ national historic site reopens after major renovation
Pedro St James one of the great cultural attractions in Grand Cayman
New York, NY, USA (August 14, 2006) – The Cayman Islands’ Pedro St James national historic site – the birthplace of Caymanian democracy – is open again after a major $1.3 million renovation of both the great house and the surrounding grounds.
Built in 1780 on Pedro Bluff, Pedro St James is one of the great cultural attractions in Grand Cayman. In addition to the picturesque lawn area, which can be rented for meetings and social functions, the site’s multimedia theatre is also open again, having received a major facelift as part of the renovations. Theatre visitors learn all about the castle’s dramatic history and the culture and heritage of the Caymanian people when they view the 20-minute presentation.
Walking through the beautiful grounds and colourful gardens of the property, visitors will find several restored historical buildings, as well as a poignant Hurricane Ivan monument. Made of 12 rocks that washed ashore during the storm, the monument represents the 12th day of September when the hurricane hit. Nine chairs and four tables, all made from the wood of a 100-year-old tamarind tree that fell during the storm, signify the ninth month of the year 2004.
Pedro St James is the perfect site for events, from business meetings to concerts to weddings. The idyllic outdoor setting accommodates up to 400 people and is fully equipped with tables, chairs and tents. An on-site kitchen allows Pedro staff to provide catering, and mouth-watering local favourites are always on the menu. The comfortable and spacious facilities can also accommodate off-site caterers. The sprawling lawn, bordering the stunning Bluff and Caribbean Sea, or the more intimate gardens and courtyard also allow the premises to host a variety of smaller or more intimate and sophisticated functions.
Pedro St James is open daily from 9:30am to 5pm. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children under twelve years. For more information about Pedro St James call (345) 947-3329.
