St Kitts announces top act for music festival

Michael Bolton to perform at 11th Annual St Kitts Music Festival in June

Basseterre, St Kitts (January 16, 2007) – Allister Williams, executive director of the St Kitts Music Festival, today announces that Grammy Award-winning artist Michael Bolton will be among the top acts performing at the 11th Annual St Kitts Music Festival taking place June 21-24, 2007.

Bolton is an accomplished singer and songwriter, having won multiple Grammy Awards for Best Male Vocalist, received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and sold more than 53 million records. During his distinguished career, he has sung with Luciano Pavarotti and Ray Charles, written songs with Bob Dylan, penned hits for Barbra Streisand and KISS, played guitar with B B King and been sampled on a track by hip hop superstar Kanye West (featuring megastar Jay-Z). As a songwriter, Bolton has earned multiple honours including BMI’s Songwriter of the Year, Song of the Year and Million-Air awards, ASCAP’s Writer and Publisher Awards and a Hitmaker Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Michael Bolton to the St Kitts Music Festival for the first time,” said Richard “Ricky” O Skerritt, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture for St Kitts. “The Festival is a wonderful annual event that creates the warm, welcoming feeling of a shared community through music, and that positively impacts the tourism sector of our economy and draws visitors from across the globe. We hope that, during his time here, Mr Bolton will discover the combination of recreational and cultural elements that make St Kitts special and be tempted to return to our island again and again.”

With his latest album, Bolton Swings Sinatra (Passion Music Co/Concord Music Group), the singer takes on classics like “New York, New York,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Fly Me to the Moon” and “That’s Life,” in addition to bringing in special guest vocalist Nicolette Sheridan for a duet on “The Second Time Around.” Bolton was the only white artist asked to perform at Motown’s 35th anniversary gala. He has also accomplished significant charity work through the Michael Bolton Charities organization, which he founded in 1993.

Additional musical acts will be added and announced in the coming weeks. Now in its 11th consecutive year, the festival attracts both locals and visitors alike. It features various musical styles on the popular market, including R&B, jazz, hip hop, reggae, soca, calypso, gospel and contemporary music. Past artists have included such top acts as Air Supply, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers, Boyz II Men, Wyclef Jean, Brian McKnight, Ashanti, Shaggy, Eve, Bobby Caldwell, DMX, Hugh Masekala, Xtatik, the Temptations, Chaka Khan, Maxi Priest, Ronald “Boo” Hinkson and Busta Rhymes.

Located in the northern Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, St Kitts offers a diverse tourism product developed from the destination’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and rich history. The island’s stunning variety of tourism attractions include hiking through the tropical rainforest, riding the scenic railway that connects the island’s sugar plantations, touring Brimstone Hill Fortress, the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Caribbean, and the more traditional vacation pastimes such as watersports, golf, shopping, tennis, gourmet dining, gaming at St Kitts’ exclusive casino or simply relaxing on one of the island’s sandy beaches. Guests can select from accommodations ranging from intimate plantation inns to larger hotels or resorts.

In 2007, St Kitts will be a host venue for the ICC (International Cricket Council) Cricket World Cup with six Phase One matches scheduled to take place at Warner Park Stadium in March 2007, featuring Australia, South Africa, Holland and Scotland.
