Anguilla’s 2006 Tranquility Jazz Festival returns with a star-studded lineup
Fourth annual music festival set for November 9-12, 2006
New York, NY, USA (June 2006) – One of the Caribbean’s fastest-growing annual musical traditions is ready for its encore. The 2006 Tranquility Jazz Festival returns to Anguilla November 9-12 with a star-studded array of international talent, including Alfred McCoy Tyner, Kenny Garrett and Eddie Palmieri.
Alfred McCoy Tyner is one of the true giants of jazz, thanks in part to his early work as the pianist for the John Coltrane Quartet where he played on some of the legendary saxophonist and composer’s most seminal works. He has earned his own place among the greats with his post-Coltrane work over the past 40 years and continues to enthrall audiences around the world with the McCoy Tyner Trio.
Kenny Garrett also boasts an impressive jazz lineage, putting in time with Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. But it is his work with Miles Davis that truly launched the career of this remarkable saxophonist. The experience helped give Garrett a diverse musical palette that has found him contributing to other genres, including rap and hip hop. His passion and talent for straight-ahead jazz has continued to make him a favourite of jazz fans in his live performances or his acclaimed recording on the Warner Brothers label.
Bandleader and pianist Eddie Palmieri has been called “The Sun” of Latin music. Over his 50-year career he has released 32 titles and won eight Grammy Awards. The latest came last February when his newest release “Listen Here!” captured top honours in the Best Latin Jazz Album category. The Bronx native made his classical debut at Carnegie Hall at the tender age of 11, then found his true love of jazz by playing the timbales in his uncle’s orchestra. Says Palmieri, “By 15, it was good-bye timbales and back to the piano until this day. I’m a frustrated percussionist, so I take it out on the piano.”
The accolades keep coming for Palmieri, including an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music and Yale University’s esteemed Chubb Fellowship. This award is usually reserved for international heads of state, but was given to Palmieri for his work in building communities through music.
The festivities get underway on Thursday, November 9 with a concert by Nnenna Freelon at the CuisinArt Resort. Friday brings a power-packed triple bill featuring Eddie Palmieri, Pharaoh Sanders and Robert Glasper. Saturday the action returns to Rumza with the McCoy Tyner Trio, Javon Jackson and another artist of the same caliber yet to be confirmed. Finally, on Sunday, it’s the return of the popular Jazz on the Beach series. Beginning at 2pm at Johnno’s Beach Stop in Sandy Ground, this is the perfect exclamation point to the swinging weekend as you soak up the Anguillian sand and sea until the very last notes of the festival wash over you and send you happily homeward.
Since its debut in 2003, the Tranquility Jazz Festival has put Anguilla on the world’s musical map by bringing some of the finest musicians in all of jazz to this pristine paradise for four days of jazz in its purest form – straight up!
“Jazz and Anguilla go together as smoothly as do our gorgeous white sands, shimmering turquoise seas and warm and wonderful people,” said Amelia Vanterpool-Kubisch, Director of Tourism. “Jazz is by its very definition a celebration… and one of the freest forms of expressions available to artists today. There are few better places in the world to experience this freedom than here on our island, where the art, artists and setting combine to bring the music to life like never before.”
Anguilla is a pristine and private escape waiting to happen. Wrapped in a beautiful and brilliant turquoise sea, this small island features 33 stunning, powder-soft white-sand beaches, warm and friendly people, a wide range of first-class lodging options, activities and entertainment that can provide you with fun long into the day and late into the night and more. In a phrase, it’s the recipe for the perfect world-class vacation.
