New Marriott resort to open in St Croix, US Virgin Islands
Carambola Beach Resort to become a Renaissance Resort in mid 2007
Washington, DC, USA (January 15, 2007) – Marriott International, Inc’s lodging portfolio in the Caribbean will expand in mid 2007 with the re-flagging of the Carambola Beach Resort in St Croix to Marriott’s Renaissance hotel brand under a franchise agreement with JS Carambola, LLP. The hotel will be operated by Ocean Properties Ltd, a major Marriott franchisee.
Originally opened as a Rock Resort by Laurence Rockefeller in the 1960s on Davis Bay along St Croix’s north shore, the Renaissance Carambola Beach Resort is undergoing extensive renovation of its guest rooms, public space, landscaping and restaurants prior to the re-flagging. The first stage of the renovation is expected to be completed in early 2007 while the second stage, which will add 100 rooms to the facility, is scheduled to be completed in 2009. The resort is situated near the renowned Robert Trent Jones-designed Carambola Golf Course, where Renaissance guests will have playing privileges.
“We’re delighted to welcome St Croix’s Carambola Beach Resort to our Renaissance brand portfolio in the Caribbean,” said Ed Fuller, president and managing director of international lodging for Marriott International. “The property is well regarded by visitors to the Virgin Islands and we are confident that the power of our distribution channels and Renaissance brand awareness will contribute mightily to its future success.”
The owners of the hotel have been making a significant investment in St Croix through a multi-million dollar renovation of the resort. In addition, the owners have partnered with community groups to help promote Crucian heritage and nature tourism. Some of the owners have contracted for additional property to construct luxury villas to be built as high-end, ecologically correct residences.
Managing partner Larry Vaughan said, “We are pleased to be announcing our venture with Marriott for this hotel to represent its Renaissance brand, which will bring a worldwide reservations system to assist St Croix with our tourism product. We look forward to reintroducing the world to St Croix.”
For dining and entertainment, the Renaissance Carambola Beach Resort will have a lounge and bar adjacent to the swimming pool, a three-meal restaurant and deck and a specialty restaurant and deck, all offering ocean views.
Other amenities include a fitness centre, game centre, gift and dive shop, two tennis courts, beach, swimming pool and Jacuzzi. A full-service spa is planned and is under development.
For meetings and social events, the resort will have 2,742 square feet of space comprised of a 2,242 square foot conference room and a 500 square foot board room.
