Montserrat celebrates Earth Day 2007 with beach and underwater cleanups
Join the Green Monkey Dive Shop on April 21 for the Splash for Trash cleanup event
Brades, Montserrat (April 11, 2007) – Join the Green Monkey Dive Shop Saturday, April 21 for Splash for Trash, an underwater and beach cleanup in partnership with the Project AWARE Foundation and the Earth Day Network, and with the assistance of the Montserrat Hospitality Association.
Last year, the Green Monkey Dive Shop organized more than 20 volunteers to clean the underwater environment and beach at Little Bay. This year they hope to triple the amount of volunteers and extend their efforts to include Woodlands Beach and an underwater cleanup at Carr’s Bay, as well as around the jetty at Little Bay.
Organizers are seeking funding and in-kind donations for an afternoon barbecue to follow their conservation efforts, as well as volunteers to assist with the underwater and shore cleanups, and to prepare the after-cleanup barbecue. Project leader volunteers are needed to coordinate the efforts at each of the proposed locations.

Earth Day began in the United States on April 22, 1970 to raise the status of environmental issues to the global stage. Earth Day’s strength is the diversity of people in different communities pursuing their passions. On the 30th anniversary of Earth Day in 2000, Project AWARE began helping to organize dive volunteers and put aquatic issues on the Earth Day map. Project AWARE is the dive industry’s leading non-profit organization conserving underwater environments through education, advocacy and action. Since that time thousands of divers in more than 115 countries have helped protect underwater environments and educate local communities each April.
Montserrat, a lush green and mountainous island of approximately 39 square miles, lies in the Eastern Caribbean chain of islands. Known fondly as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, this pear-shaped island is a traveller’s paradise for nature lovers, divers, adventurers, family and villa vacationers and honeymooners. This British overseas territory boasts the spectacular Soufrière Hills Volcano, a modern-day Pompeii in the form of its buried former capital city Plymouth, alongside flourishing, green mountains, world-class nature trails, deserted dark-sand beaches, untouched reefs and a quiet, friendly charm reminiscent of the way the Caribbean used to be.
