El Momo’s new smoke-free policy takes effect January 2008
Saba, Dutch West Indies (July 31, 2007) – As of January 1, 2008, El Momo cottages will become the first 100 per cent smoke-free hotel on the Dutch-Caribbean island of Saba. Dedicated to providing a clean, comfortable and relaxing environment for its guests, the property’s new policy is a result of guests expressing a clear demand for a healthy, smoke-free hotel experience.
Introducing a smoke-free policy is a natural evolution for the hotel, which also follows an eco-friendly philosophy. El Momo’s goal is to provide a place where guests can relax and restore their mind, body and spirit in a healthy way. The property strives to ensure that guests walk out feeling better than they did when they arrived.
Industry research, as well as the property’s own experience, confirmed a clear consumer demand for a clean, smoke-free hotel environment. Second-hand smoke toxins and residue can stay in fabrics anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of months after initial exposure, even after they have been washed.
The property believes no employees should be required to risk their good health for the sake of their jobs. As a result, El Momo’s staff will also benefit enormously from this effort to improve quality of life, rather than being required to enter smoke-filled rooms, experiencing holey sheets, burned mattresses, stinky ashtrays and smelly rooms, curtains and walls.
Like the airlines, El Momo hopes it will one day be possible for all hotels to be smoke free. The owners felt it was not enough to simply limit the number of smoking rooms or designate smoking areas. They believe the best experience for guests is a completely smoke-free hotel.
