Basseterre, St. Kitts (November 2, 2005) – To avoid conflict with the cricket Test match between the West Indies and India to be held in St. Kitts June 22-26, 2006, the 10th annual St. Kitts Music Festival will be held from June 29 to July 2, instead of over the last full weekend in June, as is traditional.
The cricket Test match will be the first time in history that St. Kitts has hosted such a large international sporting event. The match is one of several scheduled between now and 2007, leading up to the Cricket World Cup event which will feature St. Kitts as one of the host venues.
The St. Kitts Music Festival attracts locals and visitors alike and features various musical styles, including R&B, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, dance-hall, soca, calypso, gospel, and contemporary music. Past events have included such top artists as Wyclef Jean, Boyz II Men, Kenny Rogers, Brian McKnight, Shaggy, Bobby Caldwell, DMX, Hugh Masekala, Xtatik, the Temptations, Chaka Khan, Maxi Priest, Kool & the Gang, Eve, Ashanti, and Busta Rhymes.
“The St. Kitts Music Festival has evolved into one of the most enjoyable of its kind in the Caribbean,” says Richard “Ricky” Skerritt, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture for St. Kitts. “It's a wonderful mix of Caribbean and world musical entertainment that also has a positive impact on our economy’s tourism sector as hotels, restaurants, taxis, and other businesses see increased business as a direct result.”
Located in the northern Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, St. Kitts offers a diverse tourism product developed from the destination’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and rich history. Originally populated by native Caribs, the island was colonized by the British in 1623 and gained its independence, in federation with Nevis, in 1983.
St. Kitts now offers visitors a wide variety of vacation activities, including hiking through the tropical rainforest, riding the scenic railway that connects the island’s sugar plantations, touring Brimstone Hill Fortress - the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Caribbean - and the more traditional vacation pastimes such as scuba diving and other water sports, golf, shopping, tennis, gourmet dining, gaming at St. Kitts’ exclusive casino or simply relaxing on one of the island’s sandy beaches. St. Kitts will be a host destination for the 2007 ICC (International Cricket Council) Cricket World Cup with six Phase One matches scheduled to take place at Warner Park Stadium in March 2007. This phase will feature Australia, South Africa, Holland, and Scotland.
