Montserrat photo exhibition showcases continuing recovery of the island and its people
New airport boosts tourism sector
Brades, Montserrat (December 10, 2005) - The Montserrat National Trust (MNT), one of the main custodians of the island’s heritage, history and development, is joining hands with the Montserrat Media Project to stage a major photographic exhibition on the Emerald Isle. Dubbed Montserrat on the Move, the exhibition runs from December 15, 2005 until February 28, 2006.
The exhibition charts Montserrat’s progress from the first volcano eruption in July 1995 through to the rebuilding phase in the northern part of the island. The show aims to illustrate Montserrat’s continuing recovery and the resilience of its people ten years after the Soufriere Hills volcano roared back to life after near dormancy for more than 300 years.
Montserrat on the Move features the works of Montserratian photographers who participated in the Montserrat Media Project training programme, including students from the Montserrat Secondary School who were involved in a school photo project. The media project was sponsored by the Government of Montserrat and the United Kingdom Department for International Development. Images for the exhibition have been selected from submissions by more than 40 photographers.
Montserrat is currently repositioning its vital tourism sector, which has been given a boost with the opening of a new airport at Gerald’s. In addition to the new airport, work has started on a permanent capital and other major infrastructural developments at Little Bay, and the internationally famous record producer Sir George Martin and his wife are spearheading the construction of a modern cultural center on the island. Sir George was responsible for bringing artists such as Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Sting to Montserrat during the mid 1980s at his Air Studios Montserrat facility on the Waterworks Estate.
