Peter Island, British Virgin Islands February 2007 newsletter

Peter Island Resort and spa packages, new luxury villa, lifestyles weeks, new wine list and more

The Peter Island Resort Report, February 2007

If you’re reading this newsletter, it means you have been one of our special guests or you’re about to become one. Either way, you already know Peter Island is a rare and special place, combining sophistication and exclusivity with relaxed and understated elegance. Chances are you also know something about the attractions of our 1,800-acre private island, including its five beaches, a private yacht, tennis courts, scuba diving and a truly exceptional staff.

But what you might not know is that we’re busy making Peter Island even better. After much anticipation, our third and most impressive villa, Falcons Nest, will join the rental program this spring. Other exciting plans include improvements to the oceanview rooms, pool, Club Room (formerly known as the Library), bar and lobby. Both restaurants are slated for refurbishment. The whole resort is growing “greener” by the day as we step-up our eco-conservation efforts (in the years to come our plan is to use natural energy sources and become the leader in our region). And the service that has already earned us a place on Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List is being enhanced still further with training programs and the addition of three members on our executive staff.

Don’t take our word for it. Come and see for yourself.
Wayne Kafcsak,
managing director

SPA PACKAGES
For those who have yet to sample the spa’s heightened brand of self-indulgence, it’s a quiet sanctuary a million miles from the 21st Century and 150 feet from the ocean. Housed in a 10,000-square-foot, colonial-style building designed by spa specialists, it has 12 treatment suites (all overlooking the sea), an infinity pool, an oceanside Jacuzzi and a palm-shaded tranquility garden. Living up to its theme “body, soul, sea,” the spa offers a full range of therapies and treatments from body scrubs using local ingredients to purifying seaweed mineralizers.

Sample spa packages include the following:

Sea & Self includes a choice of room, all meals and four extended treatments, starting at just $3,661 per person for five nights, based on double occupancy.

Pleasures in Paradise can be added on to any accommodation package. Enjoy a 75-minute massage, a 50-minute body scrub, a 50-minute body wrap and one Thalasso mud bowl for just $360.

The Winter Spa Escape includes five nights in the accommodations of your choice, all meals and daily treatments like the Tropical Lime and Ginger Buff (80 minutes), Seaweed Remineralizer (80 minutes), Sea Spa Pedicure (75 minutes), Custom Facial (75 minutes), Frangipani and Coconut Moisturizer (80 minutes). Package starts at $4,575 per person, based on double occupancy.

RESORT PACKAGES AND DEALS
Can’t decide whether to charter a sailboat or stay at a luxury resort? Why not do both? Peter Island’s Ashore/Afloat package includes two nights onboard the luxurious 41-foot sailing yacht Silmaril, exploring the secluded bays and islands of the BVI and two or five nights of resort accommodations and all standard package amenities. Four-night packages start at $3,358; seven nights at $4,909. All rates are per person based on double occupancy.

With the Fish & Chips package – fishing, golf and poker – male-bonding trips don’t come any better than this. The “fish” component is either a day aboard a sleek and modern fishing boat for some deep-sea angling or a day of bonefishing with a professional guide. If you don’t want to fish, the captain will take you on a tour of the Baths and/or the island bars like the floating Willie T and the Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke. Whatever your selection, a full staff is on hand to provide lunch and refreshments throughout the day. The “chips” part is a day of “heli-golfing,” flying over to St Thomas to play a round at the world-famous course, Mahogany Run, rated among the best in the region. For good luck there is a Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament thrown in, with a professional table, dealer, bartender and cigars. The five- and seven-night packages start at $5,600 per person (five nights).

Unwind before the wedding with a Minimoon. Understanding that planning a wedding can be stressful, we have created the antidote: a quick four-night getaway for the betrothed to be taken before the big event. Package includes all meals, champagne, a gourmet vintner dinner, a day trip to St Thomas or Virgin Gorda, a sunset wine and cheese, a spa experience for two in one of the spa’s private, seaside bohios (thatched huts) and a private dinner on the beach. Prices start at $3,205 per couple.

Look up “romance” in the dictionary and you will see a picture of Peter Island with its island elegance, privacy, natural beauty and plenty of room to be alone when you want to be. The Ultimate Honeymoon seven-night package takes it one step further, offering beachfront junior suite accommodations, 5.5 hours of spa treatments in one of our luxurious couples spa suites and private dining for just the two of you on the beach. Prices start at $7,692 per couple.

Divers take note. The Aqua Adventure five-day/four-night package opens up the world of Peter Island’s undersea wonders. The package includes accommodations in an oceanview room, two two-tank dives per person or a “Resort Course” and one shallow dive per person, plus all the standard package amenities, all for just $2,558.

Perhaps you want to mix together the pleasures of Peter Island, ancient colonial history and some nightlife. No problem! All three extremes have been bundled together in one affordable, easy-to-book package: The Island Hopper. The package includes two night’s deluxe accommodations at the Hotel El Convento in San Juan, Puerto Rico and five night’s accommodations at Peter Island. Prices start at just $4,725.

LUXURY VILLA PROGRAM
In terms of size, our villa collection starts with Hawk’s Nest. With a 3,626-square-foot interior and a 2,100-square-foot exterior, it’s designed in the Caribbean-villa style, with high roofs and airy rooms, big balconies, a sundeck and a dipping pool overlooking Deadman’s Bay. It can accommodate up to six people comfortably in three bedrooms (there is an adjacent pool quarters with two other bedrooms available at no extra charge). All meals are taken in the nearby resort dining room. Staffing is on request. Per person rates start at $483 per night (for six people).

Next comes Crow’s Nest, built in the British-colonial style on top of a hill with panoramic views in all directions. Ideal for up to eight people, the 6,500-square-foot interior living space (5,200 exterior) includes four private bedrooms each with its own bath, a secluded verandah and separate entrance. Other attractions include a horizon-edge pool, a dipping pool, wireless Internet, a vehicle and full-time staff, including a personal chef (guests can eat in or at the resort’s restaurant). Per person rates start at $740 per night.

Peter Island’s big news for spring ‘07 is the opening of Falcon’s Nest, one of the finest villas in the Caribbean, if not the world. Classically Caribbean with a modern perspective, it has six spacious bedrooms, each with their own private balcony overlooking White Bay Beach, the sea and the surrounding islands. Inside the décor is handcrafted all the way from the tiger-maple dining-room table to cabinets concealing flat-screen televisions. The main terrace has a covered dining area and an infinity-edged, two-tiered pool with a cascading waterfall, a large Jacuzzi and a swim-up bar. The second floor and ground floor has nanny’s quarters, spa rooms and a gym. The villa comes equipped with its own dedicated staff including a chef.

LIFESTYLE WEEKS
Prepare for Baby Week (April 25–April 30) is ideal for expectant parents. The core of the week is a course (five two-hour sessions) given by Charlene L Stokamer, MPH, MSN entitled “How to Relax and Have Your Baby.” Other elements include classes in breast feeding and baby care, five nights in either an oceanview room or a beachfront junior suite, a pre-natal massage for mommy-to-be and a deep tissue massage for daddy-to-be.

Improv Week (summer ‘07) takes you along the road to wellness by tapping into your intuitive unconscious through light and fun improv exercises. It’s not about being funny; it’s about heightening your perception.

Yoga Week (summer ‘07) is aimed both at those who practice yoga regularly and those beginners who are looking for a new way to unwind.

NEW WINE LIST
Magnus Olovson, the resort’s new food & beverage manager, is even making improvements in the cellar. Wine enthusiasts will notice new wines by the glass and an extended list featuring a larger, livelier selection of champagnes, Americans and Italians, including Barolos, Amarones and Brunellos that are currently very popular. The French selection has been improved both at the top (Petrus, Mouton Rothschild, Cheval Blanc, Echezeau, Clos Vougeot) and the “good value” end (excellent bottles from lesser known regions/appelations at affordable pricing). These include whites like Alsace, Quincy, Macon-Village, Rully 1er Cru and the wonderful Condrieux and reds like Morgon, Crozes Hermitage, Cotes-du-Rhone Village and Cote Rotie.

WIRELESS INTERNET
Guests can now log on to the Internet using our wireless connection in the lobby, the villas, the harbour/marina area and in the Peter Island Club Room.

PETER ISLAND CLUB ROOM
The Library has now officially been renamed the Peter Island Club Room. Exclusively for Peter Island guests, the Club Room has a pool table, a flat-screen TV, two chessboards and three computers for surfing the Internet.

NEW TEAM MEMBERS
Magnus Olovson, food and beverage manager: Already famous for its food, Peter Island is raising the bar still further. Magnus is responsible for all food and beverage operations at the resort’s two restaurants, Deadman’s Bar and Grill and Tradewinds. He brings 15 years of hotel and restaurant experience to the table, having worked at the Sheraton Oran Hotel & Towers in Oran, Algeria and the legendary Hotel Negresco in Nice, France, which boasts two Michelin stars.

Caspar Luiken, executive manager: Coming to Peter Island just last November, Caspar is responsible for assisting our general manager, Sandra Grisham Clothier, in overseeing all daily operations for the resort. His extensive hospitality experience was earned at three prestigious London Hiltons: the Waldorf, the Paddington and the Metropole.

Jurgen Thiel, chief engineer: Jurgen is the man behind the scenes, making sure that Peter Island works. Before coming to us he worked at Kempinski Hotels and was responsible for two hotel openings in Tanzania (the Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski in Dar Es Salaam and the Zamani Kempinski Resort on Zanzibar).

Walsie Jackson, restaurant manager at Deadman’s Bar & Grill: Having joined the Peter Island food & beverage team just before Christmas, Walsie is now responsible for overseeing Deadman’s Beach Bar & Grill, assisted of course by restaurant supervisor Derek Tuckett.
