US Virgin Islands swim race benefits coral reef preservation

St Croix Five-Mile Coral Reef Swim Race set for October 21

St Croix, US Virgin Islands (May 29, 2007) – Celebrating its 12th year as one of the world’s most exciting open-water events, the St Croix Five-Mile Coral Reef Swim Race returns on October 21 to the crystalline waters of the US Virgin Islands, which are teeming with exotic marine life and precious coral reefs. This exciting competition’s world-class swim course draws participants from across the globe. Past contenders have included Olympic swimmer and Pan American gold medallist Alex Kostich and Sydney Olympics gold medallist Misty Hyman.

The fun begins on picturesque Buck Island and continues through two miles of open water and St Croix’s stunning reefs, and concludes on the main beach of the elegant Buccaneer Resort, which serves as the sponsor and headquarters of the St Croix Coral Reef Swim Race. Proceeds from the contest will be donated to The Nature Conservancy to aid in coral reef and ecosystems preservation in the areas surrounding St Croix.

“Over the past 11 years, the Coral Reef Swim Race has become one of the most highly anticipated water events on St Croix,” said Beverly Nicholson Doty, US Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism. “It continues to draw attention to the safeguarding of our significant sea life and coral reefs. And we look forward to welcoming contestants from around the world to America’s Caribbean.”

The 2007 Coral Reef Swim Race entry fee is $84 per swimmer, which covers a pre-race gathering at the Buccaneer, an awards lunch, T-shirt, swim cap, taxi to the boat and boat ride to the race start on Buck Island. The race includes nine categories for swimmers of varying ages and abilities and swimmers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Space is limited to 200 swimmers.
