Delta Air Lines sets sights on becoming No 2 US airline to the Caribbean

Airline continues historic regional expansion with new flights to Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico

Atlanta, Georgia, USA (March 8, 2006) – Delta Air Lines has set its sights on becoming the No 2 US airline serving the Caribbean, and will continue its historic expansion to the region with new and additional flights to Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico this spring and summer. Delta’s expansion offers customers new flight choices to Kingston, Jamaica; Cancun and Cozumel, Mexico; and Aguadilla and Ponce, Puerto Rico.

“We want to be customers’ airline of choice to … the Caribbean, and we’re doing that by expanding our coverage of the region with more flights to where customers want to fly,” said Jim Whitehurst, Delta’s chief operating officer. Whitehurst added that Delta currently is the No 3 US airline in Mexico and tied for No 3 in the Caribbean in terms of number of destinations served.

Effective June 1, 2006, Delta will offer expanded service between Atlanta and Cancun and Cozumel, Mexico, and new service between Atlanta and Kingston, Jamaica; and Aguadilla and Ponce, Puerto Rico. Effective June 3, 2006, new service begins between Los Angeles, Boston and Washington, Dulles and Cancun, subject to foreign government approval.

Additionally, Delta has filed for approval from the US Department of Transportation to serve New York-JFK to Cancun.

Delta’s new and expanded service is the latest in a series added or announced by Delta in the last year as part of the largest international expansion in the airline’s history. New non-stop destinations from the airline’s largest hub at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport include Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Barbados; and Antigua.

With extensive ongoing growth to Latin America and the Caribbean, Delta and the Delta Connection carriers currently offer customers an average of 60 daily flights to 38 destinations in 25 countries in the region. Delta’s hub at Atlanta is the United States’ fastest growing gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, and during 2006 Delta will see the largest growth in its history into new markets in Mexico, with service on 17 new routes planned this year.
