St Lucia amongst world’s best honeymoon destinations
Celebrate your wedding or honeymoon on this award-winning Caribbean island
St Lucia – “Secluded and sexy” is how Modern Bride magazine described St Lucia when it named the island the fifth best honeymoon destination in the world in the June 2004 issue. St Lucia was also voted the world’s best honeymoon destination in 2002, 2003 and 2004 at the World Travel Awards. Quiet beaches, secluded resorts, botanical gardens, friendly people, soft-adventure activities and colourful reefs are just some of the reasons couples come to this lush Caribbean oasis.
HONEYMOONS
St Lucia offers something for every type of couple. Those looking for an intimate resort to spend quiet days on the beach and even quieter nights under the stars can enjoy one of numerous St Lucian hideaways. Couples who crave nightlife and want an all-inclusive resort, where St Lucian rum, food and entertainment are plentiful, can choose from several popular resorts. St Lucia offers a wide range of accommodation choices, from luxury resorts and villas to intimate inns, most of which offer special honeymoon packages year round.
Adventurous couples can experience unique outdoor activities, including hiking the majestic Piton Mountains or rainforest and jungle biking through an old plantation. Properties in the south of the island near Soufriere are known for their quiet beaches and landmark Piton Mountain views, as well as their close proximity to botanical gardens and the world’s only drive-in volcano.
DESTINATION WEDDINGS
Be the envy of all your friends with a romantic Caribbean wedding at sunset! Many hotels on the island offer wedding gazebos with breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. There are also a choice of churches as well as one-of-a-kind venues such as cascading waterfalls, nature heritage sites, beaches or colourful botanical gardens. Couples can coordinate plans with their hotel’s wedding coordinator or a company such as Awesome Caribbean Weddings or Dreamy Weddings & Tours for assistance with wedding arrangements, including documentation, locating an official, caterer, band, florists and more.
MARRIAGE LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Amendments to the wedding regulations make it easier than ever for visitors to marry on St Lucia. Two types of marriage licenses have been created: an ordinary license and a special license.
An ordinary license can be obtained when the application – an affidavit and a petition – have been submitted at least seven days prior to the date of marriage.
The new amendment gives the attorney general the power to issue a special marriage license for an application submitted less than seven days before the date of marriage. Visitors can even apply for a special license on the same day of the marriage, providing all required documentation is available.
Couples planning to marry on St Lucia should bring the following required documentation, which includes certified true copies or originals: passport; birth certificate; Decree Absolute, if one of the parties is divorced; a Death Certificate of first spouse in the case of a widow/widower; a Deed Poll if a name has been changed; and evidence of parental consent in the form of a sworn affidavit stamped by a Notary Public if one of the parties is under the age of 18.
An application to be married in St Lucia must be made by a local solicitor to the Attorney General or notary who prepares and signs the license.
Weddings are not generally conducted during weekends or holidays. If a couple is interested in a weekend or holiday wedding they need to check with their wedding coordinator to be sure it can be arranged.
The following fees apply: $125 for the notary fee and an ordinary marriage license or $202 for the notary fee and a special marriage license, $37 for registrar fees and $3 for the marriage certificate.
