PLAYA DORADA’S VILLAS DORADAS GET CHIC RENOVATION AND NEW NAME
Formally known as Villa Doradas, the newly renovated Blue Bay Getaway Villa Doradas Hotel, located in the Playa Dorada complex near Puerto Plata, opened its doors on December 13. The hotel, now adult-only, features 220 stylish rooms and a 24-hour all-inclusive meal and drink plan. Blue Bay Getaway also has a chic new interior courtesy of Sarah Garcia, the same designer who did the interior of Casa Colonial, a boutique hotel famous for its luxurious and stylish features.
Note: The public relations team for the DR Ministry of Tourism had the pleasure of staying at the Blue Bay Getaway in December. This property is very affordable and chic with excellent customer service; a perfect choice for American travellers.
REMODELED JACK TAR VILLAGE BOASTS NEW NAME AND FAMILY FOCUS
Formally known as the Occidental Allegro Jack Tar Village, the property, now called First Choice Holiday Village Golden Beach, was recently remodeled into a family-orientated resort. Located in the Playa Dorada complex, the newly renovated 24-hour all-inclusive resort features a wave pool and club for the kids, while keeping the parents happy with an exclusive adults-only area. The property continues to be managed by Occidental, but ownership has been transferred to First Choice.
NEWLY REGENERATED CABARETE BEACH INAUGURATED IN DECEMBER
Cabarete Beach, otherwise known as “Kite Beach” due to its ideal kiteboarding and windsurfing conditions, recently went through an extensive regeneration. The Dominican government invested approximately $3 million into the beach, which included making it approximately 114 feet wider, as well as the addition of fresh white sand. The new and improved beach was inaugurated by Minister of Tourism Felix Jimenez on December 9, 2006.
REGENERATION OF JUAN DOLIO BEACH
The regeneration of Juan Dolio beach reflects an investment of $4.4 million from both the Dominican government and the private sector. Inaugurated on January 21, the beach has been lengthened by approximately 11,500 feet. In addition, although presently in the planning stages, the regeneration will include a second phase of construction with a variety of developments and improvements (to be announced).
AIRDROME IN NORTHWEST REGION REOPENS
Osvaldo Virgil airdrome, a small provincial airport located in Montecristi in the DR’s northwest region, officially reopened in December. The opening was celebrated with a fly-in, which included more than 40 aircraft, as well as a parachuting, hang-gliding and helicopter exhibit courtesy of the Dominican Air Force. The airport, which currently accepts flights from Santo Domingo’s Las Americas and El Higuero airports, will be utilized for tourism, as well as transferring goods within the DR, thereby increasing visitors and commerce to the area.
CONSTANZA’S NEW AIRPORT CONVENIENT FOR ECOTOURISM
The newest addition to the DR’s central region, the Constanza Airport, gives visitors easy access to Constanza’s ecotourism and other attractions with domestic flights from Santo Domingo’s Las Americas and El Higuero airports. Constanza Airport will also be used for exporting fruit, vegetables and flowers to the Caribbean islands.
OCEAN WORLD MARINA & CASINO NOW OPEN
Puerto Plata’s new Ocean World Marina & Casino opened in style on December 16 with a performance by the Beach Boys. The colourful Las Vegas-style development features a large casino, restaurant, marina and lounge where nightly live performances entertain visitors. The marina and casino accompanies the existing Ocean World water and animal park.
LEISURE AND ENTERTAINMENT DEVELOPMENT TO OPEN IN SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS
A new leisure and entertainment project, envisioned by President Dr Leonel Fernandez and several major league baseball players, will be built in San Pedro de Macoris, located between Juan Dolio and La Romana in the DR’s south-central region. The 700-acre development will include the Caribbean’s first theme park, a water park, family entertainment centre, hotels and villas, a golf course, baseball stadium and hall of fame. Select Contracts has been chosen to develop the project and will have a staff based in the DR from its break-ground point in early 2007 through its opening in 2009.
