DELTA ADDS SERVICE TO SANTO DOMINGO
Beginning June 7, 2007, Delta will offer service between Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Santo Domingo. The daily flight will depart Fort Lauderdale at 7:15am and arrive into Santo Domingo at 9:15am. The return flight departs Santo Domingo at 7:15pm and arrives in Fort Lauderdale at 9:20pm. Delta’s new service to Santo Domingo is in addition to its recently-added service from Atlanta to Santiago and Puerto Plata, and New York (JFK) and Punta Cana.
NEW LUXURY BOUTIQUE PROPERTY OPENS IN BAVARO
The Golf Suites boutique hotel opened this month in Bavaro and features 58 luxurious villas, which include 94 exquisite suites. The hotel is part of the Spanish-owned CTCOP Group and was designed by CTCOP as well as architect Sergio Marrero, president of The Golf Suites. NH HOTELES TO OPEN TWO PROPERTIES IN DR
NH Hoteles recently announced plans to open two properties in the Dominican Republic. Bavaro Real Arena, a five-star luxury hotel with 660 rooms, will open in December of 2007. VIP Real Arena, another five-star property with 375 rooms, will follow with the opening date and details to be announced.
CABARETE TO HOST KITEBOARDING WORLD CUP FOR SIXTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Cabarete, a modish beach town located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, will host the Kiteboarding World Cup (prokitetour.com) from June 26 to July 1. As its sixth consecutive year as a host, Cabarete will be the fifth of 11 stops for the competition. This year’s tournament will feature a range of talented riders representing countries such as the Dominican Republic, England, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain and more.
SANTIAGO HISTORICAL BUILDINGS RESTORED
An investment of approximately US$6 million is being applied to the restoration and rehabilitation of historical buildings in Santiago, located in the central region of the DR. The project is being directed by the Development Council for the Historic Center of Santiago’s Technical Commission, and supported by the city municipality, the Archbishop and the Culture Ministry. The Hotel Mercedes and Santiago Apostol Cathedral are among hundreds of buildings that will be repaired. Restoration is currently in process, and will continue throughout 2007.
DR REPORTS INCREASE IN 2007 VISITOR ARRIVALS
According to a recent report released by the Dominican Republic Central Bank, during the first two months of 2007 the country welcomed 664,523 foreign visitors. This is a 3.45% increase over the first two months of 2006, when the Dominican Republic saw 641,335 visitors.
