Jake’s in Treasure Beach, Jamaica the only Island Outpost property to suffer some structural damage - property to reopen September 28, 2007
Jamaica (August 22, 2007) – On Sunday, August 19, 2007, Hurricane Dean skirted the south coast of Jamaica. Island Outpost, which includes such havens as Jake’s in Treasure Beach, Goldeneye in Oracabessa, Strawberry Hill in the Blue Mountains and The Caves in Negril, have made assessments of the company’s resort properties in Jamaica, and have the following to report:
JAKE’S, TREASURE BEACH
Status: Some structural damages and debris. The property will use this opportune time to upgrade the product and reopen for arrivals on September 28, 2007. An advocate of community-based tourism, Jake’s has also opened its arms to neighbours. Please see information below.
Guests who have reservations at Jake’s prior to September 28, 2007 will be called individually by Island Outpost’s reservations department and given dependable options, including relocation to another property in the collection (based on room category booked), re-book for another date after September 28, or refund.
GOLDENEYE, ORACABESSA, JAMAICA
Status: No damage. The hotel will be open for all guest arrivals as of Wednesday, August 22, 2007. The property was well prepared as its hurricane contingency plans were put into place.
STRAWBERRY HILL, IRISH TOWN, JAMAICA
Status: Minor damages and debris. The hotel will be open for new arrivals as of Friday, August 24, 2007.
THE CAVES, NEGRIL, JAMAICA
Status: Minor damages and debris. The hotel will be open for new arrivals as of Thursday, August 23, 2007.
“Our guests took first priority. If guests wished to depart the island, it was imperative for us to assist in doing just that. Every need was met and exceeded,” said Island Outpost director of operations and Goldeneye’s managing director, Nick Simmonds.
According to Island Outpost president and Jake’s owner, Jason Henzell. “These forces of nature tend to bring out the best in people – my staff and community are incredible. Spirits are high, and our faith is stronger now than ever.” Jake’s resort has established a hurricane relief fund through Breds – The Treasure Beach Foundation (USA), which Henzell runs for the less fortunate who have property damage, no insurance and no support system, especially the sick and elderly. The initiative is also in concert with Treasurebeach.net, a community website. “The Jamaican spirit is strong, and with that, we know we will prevail (over) all obstacles. Faith is the strongest asset of any nation, and for Jamaicans, it is the gold standard.”
Breds, Treasure Beach Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1998 to promote education, sports, cultural heritage, environmental awareness and more recently emergency healthcare in Treasure Beach. The long-term vision for Breds is to establish Treasure Beach as a model for low-density, environmentally-friendly, sustainable community in Jamaica.
