How big is the country/island? Montserrat is approximately 39 sq miles. It is 12 miles long and seven miles wide, but is expanding due to volcanic activity.

What are the best things to buy here? For souvenirs with local flavour look for pottery, tea towels, needlework, woodcarvings, dolls, shell jewellery, volcano photos and memorabilia, jams, jellies, chutneys, liqueurs and Sea Island clothing.

What native dishes should I try? Montserrat's national dish is goat water, a goat meat stew. Other local dishes include mountain chicken, which is actually a large frog, salt fish, pumpkin soup, aubergine (eggplant) patties, souse (a soupy stew made from pig's head and feet), braised turtle and a variety of fresh seafood.

How should I dress to go out? Dress in Montserrat is casual. Lightweight clothing is suitable although you should bring a light sweater/jacket for evenings or during the winter. If you plan to do any hiking bring rubber-soled hiking shoes and long pants.
Can I use my hair dryer and electric shaver? Electricity is 220 and 110 volts, 60 cycles. An adapter and converter are recommended.
How much should I tip? Tip waiters and taxi drivers about 15%. Some hotels and restaurants automatically add a 10% service charge to your bill. It is not necessary to leave more unless service was above average.
