WHAT-TO-DO - NASSAU, CABLE BEACH & PARADISE ISLAND - JULY 2003
While you may be happy to relax and enjoy rare moments of peace on your vacation, your children probably find relaxation boring. If you dread taking them on another sightseeing tour, here's a list of things they might actually enjoy, allowing you to find the peace offered by quiet beaches and lapping waves.
Discovery Channel Camp at Atlantis, on Paradise Island, is a great way for children aged four-12 to learn and have fun while on vacation. "Kids are introduced to a number of items, including live animals, nature crafts, the environment, and ancient cultures," says Gia Deleveaux, programme manager. The camp also includes computer and internet access.
The Wyndham Nassau Resort's Kids Klub also entertains the four-12 age group. "We have board games, electronic games, sea shell hunting, art and crafts, and other activities," says Pat Henfield, the social hostess, at the Kids Klub.
Animals, animals
Children of all ages love animals, and New Providence is a perfect place to find them.
For those 12 and older, horseback riding is a great way to see more of the island. "No experience is needed," says Duke Smith, co-owner, with wife Sue, of Happy Trails Stables in Coral Harbour. There are daily rides, on trained quarter-horses, along the beach and through the woods on guided trail rides.
Next on the animal circuit is a visit to the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre, an ideal place for the entire family.
"The petting zoo is a great opportunity for young kids to interact with goats and sheep and also feed them," says Robyn Howard, the curator at the centre.
Ardastra's famous marching flamingos are a spectacular bonus. They strut in unison, performing the shouted commands of their leader, three times each day.
Famous mammals
No trip to The Bahamas is complete without a visit to Blue Lagoon Island and Dolphin Encounters. One-on-one contact with dolphins is an unforgettable encounter, one that children remember forever. It?s more than just a fun way to spend a day.
"The experience is also educational," says Clarissa Kinger, education coordinator at Dolphin Encounters. "We hope that kids learn to respect and not to feed and pet animals in the wild and also to respect the environment," she says.
After the encounter, it's time to find the peace and relaxation for which The Bahamas is famous. Blue Lagoon Island offers water sports, casual dining, live entertainment, nature walks, beach bowling and much more to keep the children entertained. Meanwhile you can spend the afternoon swaying gently with the ocean breeze - in a hammock under a palm tree.
