PRESS RELEASE - 2007
PUNTA GORDA, Belize (October 23, 2007) - Machaca Hill Lodge in Belize is proud to present their very first crop from the property's organic garden. Working with Sustainable Harvest International (SHI), Machaca Hill¡¯s farmers have sustainably and organically grown vegetables, fruits and herbs for use at the lodge.
¡°The harvest of this first crop is a landmark moment for the lodge as well as the local community,¡± stated Kenrick Theus, general manager. ¡°We have been diligently working on sustainable farming techniques that will allow us to cultivate the land indefinitely. The production of this crop is the first step in attaining that goal.¡±
The initial harvest from Machaca Hill¡¯s organic garden yielded hot peppers, oranges, limes, corn, chaya (local leaf vegetable), bell peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots and a number of fresh herbs including basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano, sage, parsley, cilantro and mint. Currently the organic garden provides a portion of the produce used by the lodge¡¯s kitchen in the preparation of the restaurant¡¯s meals. The property is continuing to increase the variety and amount of vegetables, fruits and herbs, with the goal of being able to fulfill more of their needs through the garden in the future.
Situated on the 11,000 sq. ft. private Laughing Falcon Reserve in Belize¡¯s Southern most Toledo District, Machaca Hill is a world class adventure getaway for active travelers looking for an eco-retreat; the lodge boasts 12 cabanas, a restaurant and bar, and numerous tours and excursions. The lodge is located 10 minutes by road from Punta Gorda Town, which is one hour by plane from Belize City. For more information call (501) 722-0050 to reach the lodge directly.
