Hotel Openings:
Amanecer: A Retreat & Spa, Lopinot, Trinidad
Opening in early 2013, Amanecer: A Retreat & Spa is nestled in the lush Lopinot Valley in the Northern Range of Trinidad and provides a perfect setting for those who want to escape the stresses of day-to-day life. A family-owned spa and hotel, the 20-room property offers guests a rustic and serene ambiance that is built on an old cocoa estate.
La Vapeur Estate, Paramin, Trinidad
Situated on Trinidad's third highest peak, La Vapeur Estate is a luxury eco resort perched on a seven-acre estate. Scheduled to open this winter, the estate sits on the edge of a largely unexplored forest and is one of the few places on the island where it is possible to see reclusive ocelots in their natural habitat, as well as several other indigenous animals and bird species. To minimize the ecological impact on the area, the resort is being built using locally sourced materials, craftsmen and builders.
Magdalena Grand Beach Resort, Lowlands, Tobago
Magdalena Grand Beach Resort, a 178 room ocean front resort that officially opened in June 2012, is the first four-star beach property to open in Tobago in 12 years. The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort offers several restaurants, bars and casual dining options including the Pembois Buffet, the resort's main restaurant, and Kali'na, a fine dining restaurant. The hotel also features a pub, piano bar, poolside grill, swim-up pool bar, gourmet pastry shop and caf.
Regent Star Hotel, Piarco, Trinidad
Located less than two minutes from Piarco International Airport, the Regent Star Hotel is scheduled to open by the end of 2012 with 140 tastefully designed rooms and executive suites and will offer guests a full spa, tennis court, two swimming pools, game room and gym along with both fine-dining and casual restaurants options, a bar and live entertainment.

Hyatt Regency Trinidad, Port of Spain, Trinidad
Hyatt Regency Trinidad recently announced its new culinary program: Food. Thoughtfully Sourced. Carefully Served. Launched as part of Hyatt's global philosophy, the program is focused on sourcing and providing healthy food and beverage options for Hyatt guests and associates that also benefit the local community.The program includes an all-new children's menu that focuses on healthy options specifically designed for kids, by kids.
The Kapok Hotel, Port of Spain, Trinidad
This fall, The Kapok Hotel joined the American Airlines AAdvantage Program, making it the only independent and locally owned hotel in Trinidad and Tobago offering airline miles. Coinciding with Trinidad and Tobago's 50th anniversary and the launch of this rewards program,Kapok Hotel is offering 500 bonus miles for AAdvantage members who stay at the hotel before November 30, 2012. Nanan's Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary Tours
With more than 70 years of experience in the travel tours industry, Nanan's Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary Tours is embarking on a new innovative venture in the Caroni Swamp on the west coast of Trinidad, offering kayaking to visitors in an effort to boost soft sport tourism and give visitors an alternative way to explore the sanctuary.
Radical Sports Tobago
Offering sports enthusiasts brand new kite board rental racks as well as the latest 2013 gear for windsurfing and kite boarding, Radical Sports Tobago will begin teaching International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) and its European equivalent, Internationaler Ausbildungsverbund (VDWS), licensed courses as of November 2012. Radical Sports will also feature new kite storage facilities, stand up paddle boards and kayaks as of this fall.
Cultural Celebrations and Festivals:
While Trinidad and Tobago continues to commemorate its 50th anniversary of independence throughout 2012 with movie screenings, calypso celebrations and other festivities, the islands are also celebrating yearly traditional events, such as Diwali (November 13) and Hosay Festival (November 24).
Parang, a popular folk music, is a holiday favorite in Trinidad and Tobago with the parang season officially taking place from October 6, 2012 to January 6, 2013. This year the traditional National Parang Championships have been converted into four mini competitions: Instrumental Parang Competition; Soca Parang Competition; Tune of Choice Competition; and Battle of the Sexes. For the first time, steelpan will be used as a lead instrument in parang and there will be a tribute to the icons of parang as well as a vintage night, featuring parang music as it was played before the advent of electronic instruments.
Parang festivities continue at the Paramin Parang Festival. A simple farming community known as a mecca for Parang, Paramin comes alive during the Christmas season and is home to one of the country's most anticipated musical events.
