CUSTOMS
Visitors 18 years and older may bring in one litre of spirits or wine and 200 cigarettes (one carton) or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco. Additionally, all passengers must declare currency or monetary instruments that exceed Bds$10,000 or equivalent.

IMPORTING ANIMALS
To import any animal, bird or reptile into Barbados you must apply to the Chief Veterinary Officer for an import permit. Dogs arriving from Antigua, Ireland, Jamaica, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the United Kingdom can be imported directly. Cats and dogs arriving from other countries must undergo six months quarantine in Britain prior to importation.

GETTING THERE
BY AIR
Flights arrive at Grantley Adams International Airport (airport code BGI; tel 428-7101) in Christ Church, which is about eight miles east of Bridgetown. The estimated flying time from New York is four hours and 20 minutes; from Toronto, five hours; from London, eight hours.

Cruise ships arrive at the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal, located one mile from Bridgetown at Deep Water Harbour, St Michael.

GETTING AROUND
BY CAR
There are plenty of car rental agencies on the island. Most roads are paved, but many have potholes, except main highways. Lighting and signage is poor. Watch for cyclists and pedestrians walking along the side of the road.
To rent a car you will need to purchase a temporary Barbados driver's license, which you can purchase for Bds$10 at the car rental agency; the Ministry of Transport; the airport; police stations in Hastings, Worthing and Holetown; or from the licensing authorities in Oistins, Christ Church, Pine, St Michael and Folkestone. Ensure you bring your valid driver's license from home or a valid international driver's license.
Driving is on the left. The general speed limit is 60km/hr (37 mph) unless otherwise indicated. Seat belts must be worn.

BY TAXI
Taxis are plentiful. Rates are fixed by the government; however, you should still confirm the price with your driver prior to travelling.
BY BUS
The government-owned Barbados Transport Board provides bus service to all parts of the island. The blue buses have a yellow stripe down the centre with the words "Barbados Transport Board" written in black on the yellow stripe. The fare is Bds$1.50 per ride on a single bus and you must have exact change. Bus terminals are located on Fairchild St in Bridgetown, Princess Alice Hwy in St Michael and Speightstown in St Peter. A sub-terminal is located at Oistins, Christ Church. Schedules and routes are available from the Transport Board (www.transportboard.com).
Scenic tours are also available on Sun departing Independence Sq at 2pm. Tickets (adults $15, children $10) can be purchased from the change booths at the Fairchild St or Princess Alice terminals and at the Transport Board Headquarters on Roebuck St, St Michael.

Privately owned minivans, identified by the letters "ZR" on their license plates, also service select routes. The fare is Bds$1.50 per ride.
Airport buses depart every 10 minutes from the airport to the city. The 30-minute ride costs Bds$1.50.
